Bill Peek
PROGRAM:
Bill Peek was the speaker today. He updated the club on New Beginnings in the Ukraine which is an overseas mission supported by our club. Youth in the Ukraine are forced to leave orphanages at the age of 16 with very few resources. New Beginnings was set up to help these youth transition to independent living. It provides a home setting where teens can learn social and work skills. A piece of property was purchased by the missionaries, with a goal of building a permanent home. This has become a very lengthy process but it looks as though the actual construction will begin soon. Because Rotary does not support the actual building, support from the club will help furnish the home once it is built. Our club will raise funds and then apply for matching funds from the Rotary Foundation. Additionally, a trip to the Ukraine is being planned in September, if you are interested contact Bill.

Honorary Co-chairs this year are Marlee Brown and Katie Brown. Cost of tickets $50/person, the evening starts at 6:00 PM. Kat Cartwright
(select for enlarged pict)
PROGRAM:
Petoskey High School Senior Kat Cartwright spoke of her trip in August to the Democratic National Convention in Colorado. She earned the trip through the Junior Statesman Foundation by writing an essay. There were some great challenges when she arrived because the students needed to find their own credentials which would allow them into the convention hall. Outside the convention hall there were a tremendous amount of protestors that were varied and interesting. Inside she was fortunate to hear the major speeches such as Hilary Clinton and Joe Biden. With luck she ended up in the right hall to hear Michelle Obama give a speech as well. Experiencing the enthusiasm at Invesco Field when Obama spoke was amazing. Kat is now interested in studying political science - three things she took away from the experience were the importance of networking, luck and patience.

If funds can be secured the project could be finished in 2-3 years. The area would be kept with its natural habitat, improvements would include paving a walk/bike path on one side of the river and making minor alterations to the river which would allow beginner and intermediate kayaking. Parking and restrooms would also be built in conjunction with current city streets. Eventually this trail could be linked to the college trails. The project would cost approximately $4 million.

PROGRAM:
Andy Hayes introduced Wendy Wieland from Northern Lakes Economic Alliance. This organizaton covers four counties with a population of 112,187. Their mission is to help companies retain and create quality jobs. This takes a lot of creativity and thinking outside the box, particularly when trying to adapt grants or projects designed for urban areas to fit rural northern Michigan. One of the biggest challenges for our area is high speed internet. There are many resources available to companies or individuals. Business Resource Centers is something NLEA has been focussing on, there are currently 8 such centers in the 4 county area, most of them found at local libraries. Libraries are a very good fit because of their evening and weekend hours, and the research expertise library staff provide. They are currently working with the Petoskey Public Library to establish a Business Resource Center there.
